Custom Motorcycle Triple Clamps in 7075-T6 Aluminum and Titanium

The triple clamp holds the front end of a motorcycle together. It’s an upper and a lower clamp that grip the fork tubes, joined by a steering stem that turns in the frame’s steering head. The steering runs through this part, so how the bike turns, how the front holds a line, and how it feels under braking all come back to it.

It carries real load and it has to be accurate, which makes it a good part to cut from billet instead of running a cast factory piece. On this one the clamps are machined from 7075-T6 aluminum and the steering stem from titanium (Ti-6Al-4V, also called TC4). The clamps are pocketed to drop weight without going soft.

Designing the triple clamp

Everything gets set in CAD before any metal is cut. The fork tube bores, the stem, the offset, and the bolt holes all have to match the bike it goes on. Offset is the one people underrate. It’s how far the fork tubes sit ahead of the steering axis, and it changes the way the bike steers, so it’s set to the bike rather than guessed at. Get these numbers right in the model and the finished part goes straight on later.

The weight comes out here too. Rather than leave the clamp solid, we pocket it: metal stays on the load paths and comes off where it isn’t doing much. You can see the open pockets and the ribbed underside in the design views. That’s what makes it lighter than the stock clamp while keeping it stiff.

Stock triple clamps are often cast, or cut from a softer grade like 6061. The clamps here are 7075-T6, one of the stronger aluminum alloys. The T6 means it’s heat-treated to full strength, and it holds up well under load for its weight. Cutting from billet rather than casting also gives a part with no porosity and a consistent grain, so it behaves the same all the way through. And the shape isn’t limited to what a mould can pull, which is what lets us cut the deeper pockets and cleaner ribs.

The steering stem is a separate part, turned from titanium.

Titanium suits the stem because it’s strong and lighter than steel, and the stem is a highly loaded piece that sits right on the steering axis. Ti-6Al-4V, the grade used here, keeps the strength up and the weight down on a part that has to take the stress of steering and braking.

What the pockets actually do

One thing worth saying plainly: cutting pockets doesn’t add strength on its own. Taking metal out can only take strength away. The trick is where you take it out. Leave the metal on the load paths, clear it from the parts that barely carry anything, and the clamp loses weight without losing stiffness. Done right, a billet clamp can come out stiffer than a heavier cast one, because the material is where it needs to be instead of spread evenly.

On the bike that shows up as a front end that stays precise and doesn’t feel vague under hard braking. Less weight up top also means less mass for the steering to swing, so the bike turns in a little easier.

Once the design is set, the clamps are cut from solid billet on a 5-axis CNC. The stem is a round part, so it’s turned on a CNC lathe.

The tolerances have to hold here. The fork tube bores have to be round and on size or the forks won’t sit and slide right. The stem bore has to be true. The pinch slots and bolt holes have to line up so the clamps close evenly on the tubes. This isn’t a part where close enough works. It holds the front end together, so it has to be accurate and safe, and every one gets checked before it goes out.

The parts come off the machine clean, with the pockets, radii, and the engraved logo done in the same job. After that they’re deburred and finished. They can stay as machined, get bead-blasted for an even matte look, or be anodized in a color, whatever the customer wants.
