PEEK Ring Machining: A Custom Stepped Ring with 30+ Holes in Three Directions

A stepped ring in natural PEEK, about palm-sized, made to customer print. There’s more going on here than a first glance suggests: a raised boss on the inner ring for locating, two bolt circles on the flange face — bigger through-holes on the outer circle, smaller ones inside — and an outer rim cut into flat segments instead of left round, with radial holes drilled through each flat. Thirty-plus holes, three directions, one part. PEEK ring machining at this level is less about any single feature and more about how they all reference each other.
PEEK CNC machining rewards sharp tools and steady feeds; rush it and the material smears instead of cutting — so nobody rushed.
Why PEEK
A flanged ring with ports around the rim usually lives somewhere unpleasant — heat, chemicals, vacuum, sometimes all three. PEEK is built for that: 250°C continuous service, chemical resistance across the board, and it keeps its strength long after nylon or POM would have given up. It costs what it costs, which also means scrapping a blank hurts. You get one shot at machining it right.
PEEK is expensive, and not every job needs it. If your part sees under 150°C and ordinary chemicals, POM or nylon does the job at a fraction of the cost. If it’s the 150–200°C range with good chemical exposure, PPS or PEI often covers it for roughly half the material price. PEEK earns its cost above 200°C, in aggressive media, in vacuum, or wherever a failed part costs far more than an expensive one.
Where Parts Like This Are Used
Flanged PEEK rings with ported rims show up in places most plastics can’t survive. In semiconductor tools they work as seal carriers and gas distribution rings around wafer chambers — high vacuum, aggressive process gases, and metal contamination off the table. In analytical and medical equipment they serve as insulator rings and fluid manifolds, where chemical resistance and sterilization cycles rule out cheaper materials. And in pumps and rotating equipment they run as wear rings and bearing cages, holding shape under heat and load where nylon would have crept out of tolerance long ago. If your drawing looks anything like this part, chances are it lives in one of these worlds.
