Custom PEEK Sensor Housing: Slender Probe Body

A probe body in natural PEEK for a water quality instrument, machined to customer drawings. One end is a square head with a through window where the sensing element sits. From there the body runs long and slender — a round shaft blending into a flat mounting platform at the tail, with a recessed pocket, small steps, and a handful of screw holes barely over a millimeter. Long and thin, thin-walled at one end, small features at the other. Each of those is a machining problem on its own; this part has all three.
Why PEEK for a Part That Lives in Water
This housing spends its working life submerged — rivers, treatment tanks, industrial water lines. That rules out more materials than you’d think. Nylon absorbs water and swells; a bore that fits a sensor on day one binds it by month three. POM handles cold water fine but degrades in prolonged hot water. PEEK does neither. It’s essentially immune to hydrolysis — hot water, steam, chlorinated water, it doesn’t care — and its dimensions stay put wet or dry. For a PEEK sensor housing holding a calibrated instrument, that stability is the whole point.
Slender housings like this get machined for all kinds of water and fluid instruments — probe bodies for water quality monitors, sensor sleeves in treatment plants, sample-line parts in analytical systems, submerged fittings on marine and aquaculture gear. The industries differ, but what they ask of custom PEEK machining is the same thing: a housing that sits in water for years and doesn’t change size.
