Aluminum 6061 CNC Machining for Automation Equipment Parts

For manufacturers seeking a balance between strength, corrosion resistance, and cost, aluminum 6061 CNC machining is often the ideal choice. In this recent project, a client from the automation equipment manufacturer industry approached us to manufacture a custom customized automation equipment parts.
Project Details
Part type: Customized automation equipment parts
Material: Aluminum 6061-T6
Key Tolerance: 0.1mm
Quantity: 56 pcs
Lead Time: 11 day
Material Selection: Why Aluminum 6061 over 7075?
For this automation project, we evaluated both Aluminum 6061-T6 and Aluminum 7075-T6. While 7075 offers superior strength (comparable to some steels), it was deemed unnecessary for this application. We recommended Aluminum 6061 for three key reasons:
Corrosion Resistance: The automation equipment operates in a humid environment. 6061 offers significantly better corrosion resistance than 7075.
Cost-Efficiency: Since the part does not bear extreme structural loads, using 6061 reduced the material cost by approximately 40%.
Anodizing Quality: The client required a cosmetic black finish. 6061 generally yields a more uniform and vibrant anodized layer compared to 7075.
Quick Comparison: Al 6061-T6 vs. Al 7075-T6
| Feature | Aluminum 6061-T6 | Aluminum 7075-T6 |
| Primary Application | Automation, Electronics, Brackets | Aerospace, High-stress Gears |
| Yield Strength | ~276 MPa (Good) | ~503 MPa (Excellent) |
| Corrosion Resistance | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Excellent) | ⭐⭐⭐ (Average) |
| Weldability | ✅ Yes (Good) | ❌ No (Poor) |
| Cost | 💲 Lower | 💲💲 Higher |
| Our Verdict | Best for this project | Overkill / Too expensive |
